Anne Barañano, M.D.

Board-Certified Retina Specialist

“It is incredibly rewarding to prevent blindness or return a patient’s vision after they’ve developed a retinal tear, retinal detachment or macular hole.”

physician profile

Board-certified retina specialist and Gulf Coast native, Dr. Anne Barañano is passionate about helping people in her community preserve and restore their vision through leading-edge retina care. She welcomes patients along the Alabama and Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Dr. Barañano obtained her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University where she discovered a love for the delicate and complex nature of ophthalmology. She later completed her residency and fellowship at Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California. She is an active researcher and has published a study on the use of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for patients with age-related macular degeneration. She has a special interest in uveitis and complex vitreoretinal surgery such as diabetic retinal detachments.

As an impassioned proponent of patient-centered care, Dr. Barañano values an active partnership with her patients. She strives to provide the highest quality care with compassion and dedication.

A Foundation in Language

“In high school, I accompanied my father–also an ophthalmologist–on a medical mission to Central America. The rich culture of Guatemala influenced me to pursue both my undergraduate and master’s degrees in Spanish. But, it wasn’t until I returned to work in a Guatemalan Highlands clinic that my desire to become a physician grew and my journey into medicine began.”

Partnering with Patients for Complete Care

“I value having an active partnership with my patients in order to provide the highest quality care. My staff and I take time to educate our patients and their families on their disease and teach them ways to monitor their vision at home. Each visit, I explain whether or not we’ve seen improvement in their eyes and carefully review the treatment options. In order to ensure the eye health of our patients, it is important to care for their overall health. I communicate with my patients’ internal medicine doctors, cardiologists, nephrologists and other physicians so we can work as a team to control their diabetes, high blood pressure and other illnesses that can affect vision. I strive to provide the highest quality care with compassion and dedication to every one of my patients.”

Innovative Interests

“Two of the most common retinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration, are some of the most interesting because of the significant advances in understanding and treatment that our field has achieved recently. These diseases are no longer considered a dismal diagnosis if they are caught when people have recommended, regular dilated eye exams and receive treatment.”

Rewarding Outcomes

“One of the aspects of retina that I most enjoy is the ability to help people recover or preserve their vision with surgery. It is incredibly rewarding to prevent blindness or return a patient’s vision after they developed a retinal tear, retinal detachment or macular hole.”
