Dr. John Myers

John Myers, MD, is an experienced, board-certified retina specialist who welcomes patients in multiple office locations, including Pensacola, Florida and Foley, Alabama. While Dr. Myers enjoys providing a full array of retina services, the core of his medical practice centers on treating macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. He finds great reward in his long-term relationship with his patients and always takes the time to educate them, believing that the more you understand, the more comfortable you will be during treatment.

An avid researcher, lecturer and skilled vitreoretinal surgeon, Dr. Myers is committed to bringing his patients effective, leading-edge treatments.

Dr. Myers knows that each patient, each case, and each procedure is unique. What remains the same is his desire to help patients realize significant improvement to their vision and, therefore, to their lives.

Seeing the Impact

“As a college student with an interest in medicine, I found an opportunity to work with the Alabama Eye and Tissue Bank, an organization created to provide ocular tissue from donors to patients needing sight-saving surgery due to corneal injury and disease. I served as a technician responsible for procuring donated corneal tissue and processing it to be used in surgery to treat advanced corneal diseases. I had a unique opportunity to counsel the families who made the decision to donate the eyes of their loved ones for the benefit of another. The gift of sight is precious. To witness the ability to save that sight was inspiring. This was the time I made my decision to become a physician and to pursue ophthalmology.”

Success through Education & Comfort

“I have a strong belief that patient education plays a tremendous role in the success of a treatment. I spend a great amount of time educating patients on the issue they have, what the likely outcomes are with or without treatment and what treatment looks like—not just today, but over the next year. The more a patient knows upfront, the more they understand the commitment they need to make for vision stability and improvement, the more comfortable they will feel with the process and the better the outcome will be.”

Enhancing Long-Term Vision Expectations

“We have witnessed and participated in bringing the most progressive treatments for some of the most vision threatening diseases to patients in the past 12 years. We can now give genuine hope to patients regarding long-term vision expectations that we could not provide 15 years ago and keep people living and working independently.”

Improving Patient Care

“I’m encouraged by the fact that the treatments we have today compared to the treatments we had 10 years ago are far superior. The percentages of patients we can really see vision improvement and vision stability is exceedingly high. It does take a commitment to consistent follow-up and sticking to a treatment plan, but if we do that, we can get patients to the ultimate goal of significantly improved vision.”

A Privilege to Serve

“It’s a privilege to get to do what I do. Every time I connect with a patient, it’s an incredibly rewarding feeling. It never gets old—even after more than 15 years in practice.”
