Dr. Sunil Gupta

Sunil Gupta, MD, is a nationally recognized retinal surgeon, a successful entrepreneur and a health care pioneer. As founder and leader of Retina Specialty Institute (RSI), Dr. Gupta ensures patients enjoy quality care at all RSI clinics throughout the southeast while welcoming patients of his own in Northwest Florida.

His love for patients, whom he respects as equal partners in their care, is reflected in his compassionate, approachable manner. His dedication to enhancing retina care for his patients—and the future—is evident in his many accomplishments.

Dr. Gupta is the co-founder and chief medical officer of USRetina—one of the largest associations of retina physicians in the United States—as well as the founder, chairman, and chief medical officer of Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems (IRIS), an FDA-cleared, cloud based, telemedicine tool for assessment of retinal eye disease in the primary care setting. The award-winning IRIS team is on a mission to end preventable blindness due to diabetic retinopathy and other conditions. Dr. Gupta was the past chairman of the Andrews Institute Ambulatory Surgery Center and serves on the board of the Andrews Research & Education Institute.

In these efforts and beyond, he assists the industry in designing better surgical systems, equipment, and processes. He has developed new medical delivery vehicles, holds multiple diagnostic and pharmaceutical patents, and is leading efforts to bring advanced new synthetic molecules to the forefront of retinal therapy. And, Dr. Gupta does it all to best serve you and your sight.

Engineering Optimum Care

“In undergrad, I was an engineering major and was working on a biomaterials project that had to do with a device to deliver insulin continuously rather than patients having to do injections. While it was very interesting, I soon realized I was more attracted to the medicine side and how the physiology of the body worked, so I decided to go into medicine. I chose ophthalmology because I could impact one’s vision for the better and chose retina, specifically, because I enjoyed the ever-present challenge of often being the last stop for patients to help save their sight.”

Patients First

“Medicine should always be focused on patients first. For me, my greatest area of interest beyond that is the concept around cell death/atrophy and dry age-related macular degeneration. It’s the one area where we have more and more patients living beyond 85, and, unfortunately, some of our cells are programmed to die at the point that leads to vision loss in an otherwise healthy patient. It’s of great interest to try to get those 250 microns of our body to live longer and help patients maintain their sight.”

Shaping the Future

“After years of effort, industry and government organizations are recognizing that we as physician leaders should have a seat at the table because we can truly represent what’s best for our patients. For me, this recognition provides a sense of pride and accomplishment, leading me to feel that I can help shape the future and make a difference in that way.”

Connecting with Patients as Family

“It’s important to truly check the ego at the door and make what I do about how I can connect with patients. The side effect of that for me personally, is it makes it so easy for me to want to see patients and help people. When I walk into a room, I often think of that patient as a friend or family member.”

A Destination for Excellence

“I don’t think there’s very much you can get anywhere in the country that you can’t get at our Retina Specialty Institute offices. Together, we are making a difference in people’s lives.”

The Great Team at RSI

“Patients tell me every day how our employees standout relative to other doctors’ offices that they go to. It’s about our people here. They love the care we give them. The doctors care; the employees care; the culture is care; and the patients feel that.”
